What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?
We all have negative thoughts.
Sometimes they creep in before our feet even hit the floor. Other times they show up after we’ve made a mistake, had a hard day, or started comparing ourselves to everyone else.
For the longest time, I thought the goal was to stop having negative thoughts altogether. But I’ve realized that’s not realistic.
The real victory isn’t never having the thought. The victory is choosing what you replace it with. Just because a thought enters your mind doesn’t mean it deserves a place to stay.
So when the thought says, “You’re going to fail,” I remind myself, “God didn’t bring me this far just to leave me here.”
When the thought says, “You’re not enough,” I replace it with, “My identity isn’t found in what I accomplish. It’s found in Christ.”
When the thought says, “Nothing is ever going to change,” I remind myself, “God is still working, even when I can’t see it.”
If I’m being honest, I don’t always win that battle right away. Sometimes I have to replace the same thought over and over again throughout the day. But every time I choose truth over the lie, I’m strengthening a new habit.
Scripture tells us to take every thought captive. I love that because it reminds me that I don’t have to believe everything I think. Not every thought that enters my mind is from God, and not every thought deserves my attention.
I’ve noticed something in my own life. The days I let negative thoughts run wild are usually the days I feel defeated before I even get started. But the days I intentionally replace them with Scripture, gratitude, or simply remembering how faithful God has been, I walk through the day with so much more peace.
Replacing a thought isn’t pretending life is perfect. It’s choosing which voice gets the final say. Some days you’ll have to do it once. Other days you’ll have to do it a hundred times. Don’t give up. Keep replacing the lie with the truth.
Because eventually, the truth becomes louder than the lie, and one day you’ll look back and realize that what once controlled your mind doesn’t have the same power over you anymore.
So today, what thought do you need to replace? And what truth is God asking you to hold on to instead?
