There are some days when staying home is exactly what we need.
But there are other days when staying home feels easier… even though it’s probably not what’s best for us.
Last night, my boys were spending the night with family, and my husband was at work. The house was quiet, and if I’m honest, I felt a little heavy. My plan was to stay home and work on my podcast.
Then I remembered there was a local music event just five minutes from my house.
I almost talked myself out of going.
I thought, “I’ll just stay home.”
But instead, I took a shower, got dressed, and decided to go by myself.
I’m so glad I did.

It Started With One Small Decision
I didn’t walk in knowing what the night would hold.
I simply showed up.
Before long, I ran into some friends who were looking for a place to sit. I invited them to join me on the bleachers, and they were genuinely excited to see me.
I danced the Cupid Shuffle with my friend, laughed more than I expected, and when the singer asked if anyone knew the chorus to Tennessee Whiskey, my friends pointed at me.
So… I sang.
The crowd cheered, the singer joked that I was going to take her job, and afterward, a sweet couple came over just to tell me how much they enjoyed hearing me sing. They even apologized for coming up to me because they thought they were being weird.
I smiled and told them they weren’t weird at all.
In fact, they made my night.
Community Is Closer Than We Think
What surprised me most wasn’t the singing.
It was the people.
I met new faces.
I reconnected with old friends.
I had conversations that naturally led to handing out a few real estate business cards—not because I was trying to sell anything, but because I was simply connecting with people.
Sometimes we spend so much time looking for the next opportunity that we forget opportunities often begin with relationships.
And relationships begin by simply showing up.
Joy Doesn’t Always Find Us at Home
Now, don’t get me wrong.
I’m a homebody.
I love quiet mornings, coffee, writing, and working on my blog or podcast.
But sometimes, when I’m feeling heavy, another hour alone isn’t what I need.
Sometimes I need people.
Not social media.
Not another scroll through my phone.
Real people.
Real conversations.
Real laughter.
My hometown reminded me of that.
Maybe You Need This Reminder Too
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had nights where staying home felt like the easiest option.
Sometimes that’s exactly the right choice.
But sometimes, fear, loneliness, or comfort quietly makes the decision for us before we’ve even considered the alternative.
Maybe your “yes” looks like grabbing coffee with a friend.
Maybe it’s going to church.
Maybe it’s attending a local event.
Maybe it’s introducing yourself to someone new.
Or maybe it’s simply leaving the house when every part of you wants to stay in.
I almost stayed home last night.
Instead, I found laughter, encouragement, community, and a reminder that joy is often waiting on the other side of one small decision.
Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t finding community.
It’s deciding to show up.
