Being a new mom can be hard. Sometimes it’s easy to get busy or sidetracked, and then you forget to take care of yourself. If you aren’t careful, you will end up feeling rundown and miserable. I felt this way in the first few weeks after having my baby, and I wasn’t giving my best self to my family. I had to learn that in order to take care of my family, I had to take care of myself. Here’s the complete self-care guide guide for new mamas!

- Don’t forget about your hygiene! I was bad about this. My nights and days were always just running together. I had to make a conscious effort to brush my teeth, wash my face, and take showers. Trust me. Taking 5 to 10 minutes every morning and night will make you feel better!
- Get your sleep! Sleep when your baby sleeps. Sometimes you don’t want to because you want to do other things, but you never know how your night will be! Take advantage!
- Don’t forget to eat! Try to eat at least 2 hearty meals and 1 snack a day. Getting nutrition will help!
- Drink lots of water!
- Exercise daily! Whether you take your little one for a walk around the mall or dancing around the living room, try to exercise a little every day! It can make you feel better inside and out. Just remember not to overdo it if you haven’t healed all the way.
- Think positive! Self-care isn’t only an outward thing. A lot of times, self care starts on the inside. Thinking positive thoughts can help your overall mood resulting in a better day!
- Have a hobby! This doesn’t sound like self-care, but having time set aside to do something that you love is good for you! Knitting and blogging are my favorite hobbies!
- Have me time! Whether it is a shower or going to the store alone, any time to be alone and relax is still me time!
- Treat yourself! Do a face mask, eat a bowl of ice cream, drink a Dr Pepper! Heck, do all 3 at the same time if that makes you happy!
- Clean a little bit every day! If you clean a little bit every day, your house will never get too bad. It’ll be easier on you in the long run!
I hope this blog helps someone because I definitely wrote this from experience! I wish all new moms the best. It gets easier, I promise!

Some of these are so simple and yet we so easily forget to do them! But I totally agree, we moms tend to forget to take care of ourselves!
Great post! Mothers often find no time to take care of themselves postpartum. I was one of those mothers in the beginning but luckily I had a lot of health. It’s so important for mama to be healthy, happy and taken care of in order to ensure the best for their child.
It’s so hard to forget about the little things like drink water! This is an amazing reminder for busy moms and it’s so important for them to take that moment for themselves! Cleaning up a bit each day is something I totally suck at, but I need to start making a conscious decision to do so! Thanks for the great list!!
Oh, girl, I can relate to this whole article! A lot of these tips can go hand in hand with helping prevent or at least manage postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. Making conscious efforts to shower, practice good (or at least better!) eating habits, exercising, etc. are all great ways to not let the baby blues or onset of PPD take over! Being a new mommy is hard, though, for sure. Thanks for this article!
Excellent tips! I remember after having my son, the hygiene part was the hardest thing to get back into the groove with. Now I enjoy my 5 minutes of alone time in the shower!! I’ll need to bookmark this and come back since I’m about to have another baby!
It’s definitely important for moms to take care of themselves so they can keep taking care of others. And it usually isn’t a huge big thing- it’s the little things you mentioned that make the biggest difference!
Having a new baby is such a whirlwind! Such good advice for new mamas.
Ugh, where was this when I needed it? Hygiene was the easiest thing to neglect. I think I once went an entire week without washing my hair, and I felt so gross (I was a daily hair washer pre-baby!).
These are wonderful tips for new moms. Self care is important for everyone, but new moms can be so focused on their child they can forget about themselves!
