I made this blog so I could help other people by writing my experiences as a mother. Earlier today I realized that I haven’t even shared the biggest day of my motherhood journey so far, the day my son was born!
Listen to “Episode 7: My Labor and Delivery Story” on Spreaker.
My son’s due date was May 4, 2019, but on April 19, 2019, our plans got changed! On that day, my boyfriend was off of work because it was Good Friday. So he went with me to my 38 week appointment. When we went to my appointment, I left laundry in the washing machine and a sink full of dishes with full intent of coming right back home to finish all of my housework and then rest. Little did I know, our day was about be a lot more eventful than I thought!
At my appointment the week before, they had scheduled an ultrasound for me because my doctor said that my stomach was measuring small. So right when we got to my appointment, we went to the ultrasound room. My stomach was already tightening up while I was getting the ultrasound, and the lady told me I was already having contractions! I was a little surprised because I wasn’t even in pain!
When I went back to actually talk with my doctor, he talked to my boyfriend and me for a little while about the fact that my placenta may not be giving my baby proper nutrients anymore, and he was measuring a little under 5 pounds. Then he said, “I think we should go ahead and induce you today so we can make sure your baby gets the nutrients he needs. So today is baby day.” I was so shocked and excited. I walked by the checkout lady and told her, “I won’t need next week’s appointment! Today’s baby day!”
I had a hospital bag already packed, but we still went back home to make sure we had everything. My boyfriend and I wanted to take showers before going too. I also did the dishes while he was getting ready. I was freaking out a little too. Something I’ll never forget was my boyfriend grabbing my hands and praying for me right before we left our house. It was super sweet and meaningful.
Just in case there were any problems, we only called and told a few people. We told a couple friends and immediate family and that’s it. My mom met us over there, and they immediately sent me to the room. Seeing the little bed in the corner waiting for my baby was so surreal! I answered all of the questions about my background health and information, and then they had my IV and Pitocin in by 2:00pm.
I was already 2.5 cm, and having slight contractions before even getting induced. I dilated about 2 cm per hour. Even though I was in some pain, the time went surprisingly fast! I only took one round of pain medicine about mid labor. I’ll just say, that was good stuff. Haha. My mom and boyfriend have funny stories about that! Something about me asking them what they wanted for Christmas (in April) and me karate chopping the air to fight off contractions. I don’t really remember everything! Haha.
Oh, about an hour into labor, they had to put me into the hallway because of a tornado warning! I was so glad it only lasted for an hour and it was before the worst pain. When we got back in the room about 45 minutes later, they broke my water. Let me just say.. Ew. Grossest feeling in the world. While they were breaking my water, my face went from fear to disgust really quick!
Around 5 hours into labor, I was 8 cm dilated and in a lot of pain with contractions. My mom left at that point because I only wanted for Javier and I to be in the room when JJ was born. At 6 hours, I was almost ready to push. They kept having to check how dilated I was because just a little bit of my cervix wasn’t wanting to dilate, and if I would’ve pushed I could’ve torn it. By the way, it hurts when they check your cervix too.
Contractions near the end hurt so bad! They are literally an indescribable pain. I took no medicine or epidural at that point so they were so strong. Some of them didn’t even have breaks between each other. It took so much energy that I was falling asleep between them. When they would hit, I would wake up screaming and squeezing the life out of my boyfriend’s hand. I kept apologizing to him every time, but then it would happen again.
I was so happy when my delivery nurse finally came in, and I was able to push! Pushing makes you not feel the contractions so it made things so much better. Still not easy though. Then I felt his head crowning. There’s a reason they call it “the ring of fire!” After his head came out, his shoulder got hung for a second, but once I was done and they placed him on my chest, it was the most amazing moment of my life. Javier David Salgado-Frazier was finally here at 8:34pm on April 19, 2019!

I couldn’t believe I had actually done that! I still can’t believe it and it’s been 3 months almost! I didn’t even have any stitches. He was 6 lbs and 3 oz, and 18.5 inches long. He was small, but he was healthy! He also had a head full of hair! We were so in love. I was also in love with my McDonald’s meal my dad brought me after a full day of not eating. Haha.
Even though it was hard, it was so worth it. I also plan on having a few more babies still. I have so much more respect for mothers now. We are awesome! Also to anyone reading this who is expecting their first baby, you got this! ❤️
