12 Tips to Help You Build a Strong Relationship

This month is special for my husband and I. June 25, 2020 marks 3 years of us being together. We have endured good and bad times together, and we are stronger than ever. Even though 3 years is not a super long amount of time, I have learned so much about what it takes to build a strong relationship. We have gone through a semi-difficult pregnancy and raising an almost one year old together, and we have stayed strong through it all, and it is all due to these twelve tips I am about to give you!

Listen to “Episode 10: 12 Tips to Help You Build a Strong Relationship” on Spreaker.

1. Choose Your Battles Wisely.

Picking your battles is a very important part of any relationship. No one wants to be around someone who constantly blows everything out of proportion. If something bothers you, just think about it before starting an argument about it.

2. Identify Your Partner’s “Love Language.”

A love language is basically the form of affection that makes you feel the most loved. For some people, it is receiving gifts. For others, it is simply just giving time and effort. For my husband, the way the his heart is having dinner on the table and a smile waiting for him when he gets home. My love language is when my husband vocalizes his appreciation for me, and when we get to spend quality time together.

3. Trust and Respect Each Other.

This one is HUGE! Our phones have the same password (not intentionally), but I don’t ever feel the need to check his phone. We also use each other’s phones for different Apps, and I would never feel intimidated to leave my phone with my husband. We even tell each other if someone tries to hit on us or slide in our DMs. Haha. Trust is super important!

4. Keep Open Communication.

Javier and I talk about anything and everything together. We also like to keep each other in the loop with how each other’s lives are going. He tells me about things going on at work, and I fill him in on what I did during the day.

5. Be a Team!

This one did not really come up until we moved in together. When we moved in, we had to figure out how to handle bills and other things. Then teamwork really started when our son was born! I could not get through life without Javier. He works while I take care of our son and our home. Teamwork makes the dream work!

6. Celebrate Victories Together (Big or Small).

If he gets a promotion, cook his favorite meal! If something awesome happens to you during your day, tell him so he can be happy with you. Celebrating each other is so special. It shows that you really care about the other person’s happiness!

7. Have Fun and Laugh Together!

Goof off together. Watch a funny movie. Scroll through funny memes. Bring up that old inside joke or make a new one! Just do not be too serious all of the time. Laughter is so beautiful, especially laughing with someone you love. My husband and I are always picking around. We have funny nicknames for each other and our son that make us giggle all the time. There are even times when we will play would you rather before bed, and we come up with crazy stuff to make each other laugh. It’s great!

8. Give Each Other Space When Needed.

A little space is good. I get my “me time” when me husband is at work, and I’m always ready for him to come home. Also my husband loves soccer, and when his friends invite him to play, I always tell him to go enjoy himself. It’s good to enjoy being together, but it’s also important to be able to enjoy time apart from one another.

9. Get Along With Your Family-In-Law.

This is important. You need to love his/her family because it is what makes them who they are. My husband is Hispanic, and his mom only speaks Spanish. When I met her 3 years ago, I only knew enough Spanish to greet her. If she kept a conversation going after that, I was lost and I felt embarrassed. Now I can speak Spanish somewhat fluently. I can spend time with my mother-in-law by myself without needing translation. I basically spent every day for the first year and a half at her house so that’s why! Also he has 4 younger brothers and a sister that was always around for backup! Sometimes it takes effort on your end to make things work (even without a language barrier), but just know that your significant other will be able to love you on a deeper level if you love his family.

10. Dream Together!

Always have future plans and goals. For example, our goals are to save up for a bigger house, have 2 more children hopefully, and eventually travel as a family! Goals and dreams give you both a common motivation in life. Sometimes it’s fun to throw your dreams out there even if they seem far fetched. Some amazing conversations can blossom that way, and your partner can help you dream big as well.

11. Pray Together.

Praying makes you very open and vulnerable, and I feel like praying as a couple helps you grow so much together spiritually. I was feeling sick a few weeks ago, and it was super sweet because my husband sat with me, and we prayed together. It comforted me, and I felt better soon after.

12. Try New Things Together.

Book a small vacation somewhere new (research first haha)! Cook something new together. Try a new restaurant. Take a dance class. Just change it up from your day to day life every now and then.

Final Thoughts:

Every relationship is different so the things that work in my relationship may differ from someone else’s relationship. The most important thing is that you do what is best for you! I hope that you enjoyed this blog and will stay tuned for future posts!

Stay safe out there! ❤️
